It may be 2020 but the origins of this story lie in the beginning of the 19thC, while Europe was on the verge of change. The story begins with a man named Johann Bentham, a German/English philosopher whose interests in the occult became a madness. Rumors at the time dismissed the man as little more than a lunatic with a talent for scamming people out of their fortunes. Using his vast resources he set up the Order, an organization dedicated to the pursuit of his whims and interests in the supernatural.
After years of research he developed something called Gates, portals which were meant to open onto another world. The outcome of their opening was uncertain, some put forth the theory that the surrounding area would become hell, others that it would prosper and another group said that nothing at all would occur and that it was simply a miscalculation. Bentham went ahead with the construction of his gates, located throughout European capitals and to each of these gates four/three keys were assigned. But they could not be ordinary keys, they had to be living keys made of flesh and blood, who breathed, talked, loved, lived.
However, not all was certain as things within the order were at a breaking point of whether or not the opening of the gates should go ahead or not. Before Johann could announce his decision of what it was to be done with the gates he was brutally murdered and the Order split in two, both blaming the other for the killing.
The Black Order, who believed that it had been Johann's will to keep the gates closed and the White Order, who believe the gates should be open and used as that was the true will of Bentham.
Lisbon. London. Brussels. Paris. Rome. Berlin. 2020. Both Orders had faded into obscurity until the 21th Century when the Oracles alerted the remaining members of their Orders that the time to open the gates was coming close again. With this at hand, both rushed to prepared themselves for the upcoming conflict.
